When I was growing up, we had outside dogs. We would take them for walks and feed them well ...and they seemed happy enough.
One dog was a German Shepherd-Husky mix, named Rex. He had the German Shepard face and coloring, and the Husky tail. We knew Rex liked to chase cars, and we had lost one dog that way, so we had to chain him up. But, one time we hitched him to a sled ...when we heard Uncle Bob was coming over. We took Rex to the top of a hill, and sat on the sled ...waiting!
When Rex saw the car, we felt we had the ride of our life!!
Now, nearly 35 years later, my wife got a dog ...named Summer. Her favorite activity always seems to be running with the other dogs at a wooded and field area near our home, where every dog owner in our neighborhood usually frequents.
A credit to my wife, I think she is one of the best dog owners ...and she had given Summer all of the recommended treatments to maintain good dog health. But, one day Summer began to scratch ...and she scratched ...and she scratched.
My wife took Summer to a vet, to look further into the scratching. It seems that Summer has gotten some sort of mite. Somehow all her treatments did not prevent her from getting the mites. And though the vet gave my wife additional treatments for Summer ...she continued to scratch.
Needless to say, as a responsible dog owner, my wife doesn't want to give what Summer has to other dogs, so Summer has had to deal with not having those runs with the other dogs.
Sadly, Summer does not understand. She used to seem to know what time it was ...when she'd go for her run. And she'd get all excited. You pet owners are familiar with all the different mannerisms of anticipation with your own pets.
Well, some time has passed, and it's been a while ...and during that while, Summer has shown disappointment, unhappiness, and has appeared even a bit depressed. Our happy dog does not seem happy.
Summer even seems to get a bit upset on occasion, acting out in some ways as she did as a pup.
